AI influencers are mostly lying to you. I audited 20 of them.
I clicked every 'I made $10K with AI in a weekend' thread. Here's the pattern. Spoiler: the money is in selling the course, not the app.
I spent a weekend clicking every "I made $10,000 in 48 hours with AI" thread on X. Twenty of them, top to bottom. Here's what I found.
The pattern
Of the 20 threads:
- 14 were selling a course, a Notion template, or a "cohort"
- 3 were selling the tool they were demoing (they built it, so of course it "works")
- 2 were counting revenue that was actually just their existing consulting income rebranded
- 1 was legit and I couldn't figure out the catch, so I DM'd the guy. He replied. He wasn't making $10K. He was making $700. Someone else rewrote his caption.
That's the whole thing. That's the industry.
The tell
Every fake thread has the same three moves:
- A screenshot of a Stripe dashboard cropped to hide the timezone
- A "here's the exact prompt I used" that is worthless without their audience
- A soft CTA to a course, waitlist, or free PDF that hoovers your email
If you see all three, you're the product.
Why this matters
Because there are people quitting their jobs based on these threads. Real people, real mortgages. The gap between "AI is genuinely powerful" and "AI made me a millionaire this weekend" is where careers go to die.
The good news: the tools are real. You can build things you couldn't before. You can start a service business you couldn't start before. But you have to actually build the thing, sell it to actual humans, and get paid actual money.
There is no weekend. There is only work, done with better tools than we had last year.
